VACAVILLE — Joey Niccum poured in 20 points and the Buckingham Charter boys basketball team defeated Valley Christian for the first time with a convincing 96-69 triumph at Vaca Pena Middle School on Saturday.

“It was a good win for the school,” said Knights coach Dan Curry, whose team effectively employed a half-court trapping defense.

“We took advantage of a lot of layups,” the coach said. “We must have had 25 layups.”

Derrick Chavis added 16 and Josh Niccum 14 for Buckingham (17-5, 7-2), which can tie for Sacramento Metro Athletic League title if it wins at Sacramento Adventist on Tuesday and Valley Christian defeats Faith Christian.
