Bad time for Timmy to do his thing – again

By
From page B1 | July 02, 2014 |

For a little while last week, “The Happiest Place on Earth” wasn’t in Anaheim.

Rather, it was at AT&T Park where Tim Lincecum of the San Francisco Giants pitched his second career no-hitter over the San Diego Padres.

Unfortunately, I was at Disneyland, where such happenings as no-hitters tend to get lost while scurrying from ride to ride and dodging half the population of North America in the process.

A son-in-law with a smarter phone than mine broke the news to me.

Then I checked my phone and found a text from former Daily Republic sports writer Mike Corpos, that read: “Sorry to ruin your vacation, but Timmy just threw another no-no!”

Brian Arnold, DR assistant sports editor, simply texted “Timmy!!!!”

They both know my pain. They were two of the many who texted me regarding Lincecum’s first no-hitter, which I was equally oblivious to as he threw it the same night last summer as the East-West Charity Football Classic in Napa, which I was covering.

Right then I wished I hadn’t worn the only Giants T-shirt I brought the day before instead of the throw-back Disneyland T-shirt I then had on.

I noticed those wearing Giants apparel walking with a slight spring in their step, but only talked with one as we passed each other in the maze-like line for Toy Story Midway Mania! in California Adventure.

“Did you hear about Timmy?” I asked a guy wearing a Giants hat, hoping there was someone else more hopelessly out of touch than me.

“Oh, you mean Lincecum’s no-hitter?” he replied.

“Yeah,” I answered back.

End of conversation, but that’s the way it is in maze-like lines.

The next day I was surprised to see several Lincecum jerseys, the cheap black T-shirts and the full-blown home cream white No. 55s.

I’m amazed at those who pack appropriately for vacations.

The day after the no-no I couldn’t help noticing guys wearing Padres caps. Were they rubbing it in that San Diego took two out of three in the series? Or did they pack just one hat?

I did see some wearing A’s apparel, though not nearly as much for the Giants, a bit surprising since the Giants are in a free fall and the A’s have the best record in baseball.

The Dodgers vs. Angels fashion statement wasn’t even close. Dodger blue was everywhere, much of it very new, which begged the question: Does “Garvey, Lopes, Russell and Cey” mean anything to them?

There wasn’t a lot of love for the NBA as it’s hard to be a basketball fan in Los Angeles right now. The Lakers are a mess and the Clippers . . .

There actually were several Warriors hats and T-shirts, most with some sort of tribute to Steph Curry.

I saw a few Kings hats and was surprised at how well Sacramento was represented. Then I realized they were for the newly crowned Stanley Cup champions and wondered why there weren’t more of them.

Not surprisingly, jerseys for teams in the World Cup were everywhere, but who has enough room in their suitcase to go with Bosnia-Herzegovina one day and Algeria the next?

It’s all part of the magic of The Magic Kingdom.
