FAIRFIELD — A pair of crosstown rivalry games highlight the high school basketball action this week.
The Armijo boys host Vanden today at 7:30 p.m., while the Indians girls entertain the Vikings on Friday at 7 p.m.
Armijo’s boys squad (6-1) is off to its best start this decade despite its 74-68 loss to East Union of Manteca in Saturday’s championship game of the Vacaville tournament.
Vanden (4-2) took third in the same tournament, losing its opener to Davis 103-85 before eventually defeating Woodland 61-51 for the consolation crown.
The Vikings defeated the Indians 83-66 at Jim Boyd Gym in last season’s meeting.
On the girls side, Vanden (5-0) won the title in the Claude Brock Tournament at Antelope by defeating Grant of Sacramento 60-50, outscoring the Pacers 17-9 in the fourth quarter to break open a tight game.
After starting the season 1-2 in tournament play at Clovis West, the Indians (4-2) have won three straight, including road wins over Bethel of Vallejo (51-48) on Friday and Castlemont of Oakland (45-41) on Saturday.
Before this week’s showdown with the Vikings for their home opener, the Indians play at Christian Brothers of Sacramento today while Vanden hosts Vacaville on Wednesday.
In a true classic, the Vikings opened the 2011-12 campaign with a 66-63 loss to the Indians, who were playing their sixth game of the season.
Most other action involving city teams takes place on the road this week.
Oakland is at the Rodriguez boys (3-5) tonight, while the Mustangs girls (2-7) entertain Bethel on Wednesday
Meanwhile the Armijo boys host Dixon on Saturday.
In other games tonight, the Fairfield boys (3-4) are at Pleasant Grove of Elk Grove, while the Falcons girls (2-4) are at Kennedy of Richmond.
