FAIRFIELD — There’s nothing that says a team is ready for the season quite like outscoring its opponents 14-0 in the All-City tournament.

The Armijo High boys soccer team did just that as it captured its second consecutive All-City Tournament title with an 8-0 drubbing of Fairfield at Brownlee Field Thursday night.

“I’m happy that we put goals up,” Armijo coach Brad Burzynski said. “Every player has confidence. In the past it’s been that we can’t finish. Now we are confident that we are going to finish.”

Tyler Grieves opened the flood gates for the Indians, scoring a goal off of Victor Calderon rebound in the second minute.

Grieves pushed Armijo further into the lead six minutes later when he sent in a cross from the left side to Victor Ruiz, who calmly placed the ball into the back of the net.

Jorge Zepeda continued the onslaught a minute later, scoring off an Adrian Calderon assist.

Most teams tend to rest on its laurels after three goals in the first 10 minutes, Armijo just got started.

Zepeda notched his second goal by blasting a shot from just inside the penalty box after a scramble in front of the net.

In the 28th minute, Victor Pacheco scored on a header off of a Trevor Flynn cross. After a Patrick Richards goal in the 35th minute, Armijo went into halftime with a comfortable 6-0 lead.

The Indians eased off the accelerator as they started the second half, slowing down play with precision passing in their defensive half of the field.

Slowly, Armijo entered its offensive third, culminating in Grieves being pulled down in the box to earn a penalty kick. Grieves converted the penalty in the 50th minute for his second goal of the night.

Finally in the 56th minute, Ruiz fed Brian Galven to give the Indians their final goal.

After the game, the mood went from celebratory to a more work like tone as Burzynski talked to the players.

“Obviously the guys were happy, but as soon as I mentioned Napa, everybody got real serious,” he said. “It’s great knowing that on Monday we are going to work hard at practice. It’s to say that we are the champions of the city but we are looking for the playoffs.”

In the third place game, Rodriguez cruised by Vanden 3-0 on the strength of a Josh Emenalom’s hat trick.

In the JV tournament, Armijo took the city championship beating Rodriguez 6-0, while Fairfield captured third shutting out Vanden 2-0.

Armijo opens up Monticello League Empire play visiting Napa on Wednesday. Fairfield opens its MEL campaign hosting Will C. Wood.

Rodriguez begins its quest for the Solano County Athletic Conference title hosting American Canyon while Vanden kicks off its season against Vallejo on the 12th.

  1. Congrats to the Indians! Not so much to the new coach, though. He says,
“I’m happy that we put goals up,” Armijo coach Brad Burzynski said. “Every player has confidence. In the past it’s been that we can’t finish. Now we are confident that we are going to finish.”

Just curious, was Burzynski born a jerk, or does he have to work @ it? There is a reason the PREVIOUS coach was there for more than 10 years. You needn’t belittle his work.

  2. Smart Gal~ This is not Burzynski’s first year as varsity coach. What makes you assume he’s talking about any other years that he was not the coach. You took the statement out of text. I’m more than sure he’s speaking about his experience as coach and nothing more. I also know that he has GREAT respect for Coach P and always will.
