Armijo bedeviled by Davis

FAIRFIELD — It was an all too familiar sight as the clock wound down to zero at Brownlee Field Friday night.

Davis High running back Winfred Roberson proved too much as the Armijo High football team lost its season-opener 27-3.

“The guys played hard,” Armijo coach Aaron Tolliver said. “We didn’t like the outcome, but we played hard.”

At the start, the Indians didn’t seem to be a team that has gone two calendar years since their last win. It took them 5 minutes, 3 seconds to march 46 yards, with kicker Victor Calderon splitting the uprights with a 42-yard field goal.

Armijo’s defense then stepped up to the plate, forcing a Davis punt that gave the ball back to the offense.

After a three-and-out, the Indians luck seemed to finally turn a corner as they recovered the punt after it had glanced off a Blue Devils foot.

Having recovered the ball on its own 31, Armijo started moving the ball as it had on its first drive. Quarterback Jacob Chauvin had a 9-yard run and a 5-yard pass to tight end Justin McCaleb before having to punt the ball to end the first quarter.

The second quarter started with a sign of things to come. The Davis offense woke up and drove 53 yards, with most of the yardage coming by way of Roberson runs, to set up a field goal attempt. However, Armijo’s luck proved to be intact as the kick sailed wide left, leaving Armijo with the lead.

Having received the ball at the 20-yard line the Armijo offense had a hard time finding any momentum as it was forced to punt after another three and out.

It didn’t take long for the Blue Devils to capitalize on the Indians struggling offense. Roberson scored his first touchdown of the evening, three plays later on a 42-yard run that saw him break three different tackles. After a missed field goal, the Blue Devils enjoyed a 6-3 halftime lead.

As the second half kicked off, Davis maintained its momentum by driving 74 yards, culminating in a touchdown off of a one-yard plunge by Roberson. After a Thomas May extra point the score was 13-3.

When the Indians received the ball it seemed they had found their running game. Three different rushers carried the ball, and Chauvin found two different receivers before the drive was halted and they were forced to punt.

After the punt, Davis put game out of reach.

Davis scored on its next two possessions with touchdowns coming from a 20-yard Shayne Reagan pass to Corey Nelson and a seven-yard Roberson rush.

Despite the loss the Indians are confident that their first win is right around the corner.

“We are very confident,” Tolliver said. “We will get those mistakes changed and we will be better.”
