Area wrestlers look to make mark at SJS Masters Championships

FAIRFIELD — Thirty five may not seem too large of a number, but for local wrestlers, it’s pretty big.

That’s how many local grapplers will be at Stockton Arena for the first day of the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Championships, Friday.

Action continues in the double elimination tournament, Saturday, with the top seven finishers advancing to the CIF State Championships in Bakersfield, March 7-8.

Wrestling starts at 9 a.m. both days.

Vacaville leads the way with 13 Masters qualifiers, while Rodriguez has nine and Armijo seven wrestlers in action.Wood has four qualifiers, while Vanden and Vacaville Christian have one apiece.

The Bulldogs have won the last two Masters team titles and have won six of the last seven.

Indians coach Cesar Correa is bringing a record number of wrestlers to Stockton while under his supervision.

“For me, it’s a record,” Correa said. “The most we had was six in 2009 and 2005 (while Correa was an assistant). It’s a good thing. We’ve been down around 5, 4, 3 (in recent years). It’s good to get the numbers back up.”

Correa noted some of his guys like that their season is still alive, while a few others have their eyes on Bakersfield.

“I think some of the kids are happy to be there and then there are a few that are trying to make a run at state,” the coach said. “They’re pretty motivated. They’ll have to beat some tough guys. One of the things I told them is don’t worry about the rankings. You can beat anyone there because you made it this far (just like them).”

Here’s the list of area wrestlers in action at the Masters:
