VALLEJO — If you ask who the three brothers of Three Brothers Furniture are, you’ll get quite a response from its owners.
Brothers and owners Larry and Gary Glenn offer a different response every time – their brother is sometimes Don Taylor of the sales staff. Sometimes they say their third brother is actually their sister.
But don’t be fooled – there is no third brother.
While they like to goof around about their name, the staff members at Three Brothers Furniture are serious and committed to the work they do.
In a market that’s consumed by discount furniture and big box stores, the Glenn family has offered quality furniture with a personal touch for 60 years in the Bay Area and 50 years at their current location on Sonoma Boulevard in Vallejo.
The Glenn brothers’ parents inherited the store name in an unusual way. When they opened up a furniture store in Pinole in 1952, the previous store sign, “Three Brothers Hardware and Nursery,” remained.
Instead of getting a new sign, they just replaced “hardware and nursery” with “furniture and appliance store.”
The name remained with them after they moved their store to Vallejo. At one point, the father considered changing the name to Glenn’s Furniture, but as it turned out, his brother already owned a store in Vallejo with that same name.
Gary and Larry Glenn learned the ropes under their parents until 2009, when their mother died, leaving the store to her sons.
Within the family business, a non-related family of seven staff members has grown, including salesmen Earl Jewell, Don Taylor and Justin Glenn.
The team strives to offer its shoppers the best, most attentive customer service possible, a quality Gary Glenn said is lacking in many businesses.
That commitment to great service starts when a customer walks in the door and, from there, it never stops.
If someone has an issue with flat sofa cushions, Three Brothers will get them stuffed for free, even if the cushions weren’t purchased at their store. If a piece of furniture malfunctions, one of the staff members will go directly to their house to fix the problem.
Longtime customers Bob and Carol Tedesco said almost their entire house is filled with Three Brothers furniture. After 35 years, they keep coming back for the good quality furniture and great service.
“I personally don’t like them,” Carol Tedesco said, sarcastically. “Kidding – I wouldn’t go anywhere else.”
Loyal customers like the Tedescos also come back for the quality furniture and the staff knowledge. The store carries a variety of manufacturers, such as Lazy Boy and Flexsteel. The brothers work closely with each company.
That commitment to excellence in every aspect of their business helped keep them going, even with stiff competition from bargain stores.
“If you don’t have good service, you’re gone,” Gary Glenn said.
