Allied Propane fuels Northern California

DIXON — Propane is used by more than 12.6 million U.S. households for space heating and other purposes and by millions of other Americans for agricultural, commercial, industrial and transportation applications. Propane (also called liquefied petroleum gas) is a liquid fuel stored under pressure. It’s typically vaporized to a gas before it leaves a storage tank.

For many people, the knowledge of the propane industry and propane marketplace is limited to the animated comedy series “King of the Hill” that ran on the Fox TV network from 1997 to 2010. The popular show featured the family patriarch, Henry “Hank” Hill, as the assistant manager of Strickland Propane and a salesman of propane and propane accessories.

In the real world beyond cartoons and comedy, propane runs through the family tree for Stan Teaderman, longtime owner of Allied Propane. As Teaderman grew up, his father was in the propane business serving Napa and Sonoma area customers. Teaderman followed in his father’s footsteps.

Founded in 1967, Allied Propane Service began with two employees, a small office in Richmond and no customers. Since then, Allied Propane has demonstrated steady growth and has provided a broad range of propane services to customers in the Bay Area, with facilities in Richmond, Napa and Dixon.

After 45 years of competing in the competitive propane marketplace, Allied Propane now has more than 60 employees who live in the same communities they serve, and they understand the needs of their propane customers, both big and small. Allied employees’ knowledge and relationships have enabled Allied Propane to become a regional front-runner in the propane industry.

It was a bit more than two decades into the business that the decision was made to expand Allied Propane from a single office to a pair of offices. It was another decade before Allied Propane opened its third office in Dixon in 2002.

Allied began with no customers but grew quickly, primarily in Contra Costa County, and expanded to now serving customers in a dozen Northern California counties.

A family owned business, Allied Propane has a long history of community support and participation, as well as an ongoing corporate commitment to providing an energy-efficient fuel source for area residents and businesses.

Early into the business venture, Allied began plying the Pacific Ocean, providing propane internationally to Pacific and South Pacific islands in the 1970s. The long-distance tropical business venture yielded to new drilling and exploration for gas near Australia.

“We currently deliver anywhere from five gallons of propane in a cylinder up to as much as 11,500 gallons in our truck and trailer rigs,” Teaderman said.

Allied Propane provides propane to residential customers who need propane for much more than the backyard barbecue. Allied has propane for home heating, kitchen appliances, water heating, outdoor heating, cooking and swimming pool heating.

On the industrial side of the business, Allied provides many businesses with temporary boilers, generators, heat-and-lighting fuel piping design and installation. Scores of forklifts and motor vehicles in the region are powered with propane delivered by Allied. Fixed-locations generators, manufacturing processes, heat, cooking, water heating, commercial grain dryers and kilns, boilers and vaporizers are fueled by Allied Propane.

Many Northern California’s farmers with their verdant pastures, orchards and crops use Allied Propane for diverse purposes, including frost protection, sustainable weed control and crop drying.

“We continue to expand our resources,” Teaderman said of his company. “We’re in the process of reviewing opportunities and possibilities out of state.”
