Wooden Valley Winery continues making award-winning wine. It recently won several honors at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, including a gold for its 2013 Sauvignon Blanc and its 2011 Merlot. The winery is fortunate to have a lot of acres of vines, more than it needs, said Ron Lanza of the winery. It can take the best 10 percent of grapes out of a vineyard for Wooden Valley Winery wines and sell the remainder. “That’s a luxury of ours,” Lanza said. Wooden Valley Winery is located in Suisun Valley. Local grape growers compare the climate to that in the world-famous Napa Valley, with warm days and cool nights because of sea breezes coming through gaps in the coastal hills. The winery was founded in 1933 by Salvador Brea. Mario and Lena Lanza joined the Brea brothers as partners in 1944 and became the sole owners in 1955. The Lanza family continues running the winery today.
