Weekday mornings between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m. or 7 a.m. is a special time at The Jelly Donut of Fairfield. That’s when the treats cooked each day at the shop are hot out of the oven. They come out in big numbers, too, perhaps 100 each for the bagels, croissants and Danish. And the doughnuts? Maybe 1,000, but even owner Kim Lim isn’t certain. “Too many to count,” she said. About 4 a.m. to 8 a.m. or 9 a.m. are the busiest hours on weekdays, Lim said. But weekends tend to be more leisurely for people, so the busy hours at The Jelly Donut extend to 11 a.m. or noon. The biggest selling doughnut is glazed, Lim said. The shop has customers that come back every day, she said. It also is a multiple Readers’ Choice winner. “I guess we just try to make the best we can, the freshness, we’ve got the best price,” Lim said. She and her husband Ly Ngov started The Jelly Donut in May 1987. Both are from Cambodia.

Runners-up: The Donut Wheel, Donut Queen, Red Devil Donuts
