The liberal great society welfare disaster has done great harm to blacks and the United States. Trillions spent over the decades and yet no reduction in the poverty rate. And then there’s the ilitgetimacy rate and its corrolary–the crime rate. Those went up and millions of fatherless kids went on to get and stay on welfare. Generation after successive generation on welfare, in jail or shot dead. And yet the liberal juggernaut rolls on–promoted by a liberal media and perverse Hollywood.

When my child was in Fairfield schools, I couldn’t help but notice that students in her diverse schools self-segregated themselves. Students tended to group themselves according to ethnicity. This was 25 to 30 years after busing to achieve integration was introduced, but the promised land of kumbaya was not delivered. I’m not sure what the answer is. I’m not sure there is an answer. I think students would be better served by schools concentrating on educating them, ALL of them.

On this we agree: Every idea, every program, should be tested against facts and forced to defend itself from time to time, and that applies not just to “liberal” prorams. I suppose I should not be surprised that Sowell thinks the unanimous Supreme Court that ruled separate was not equal in public el-hi education over 50 years ago (in Brown v. Board of Education) was wrongly decided, but he is going to have to do a lot more talking to make me believe it. We do need to get away from forced busing at some point, and I would like to see some experimentation in that regard. That means public schools would tend to return to being as segregated as the neighborhoods they serve. It just seems to me by now there are better solutions than busing to achieve the desired results.
