I agree, G MAN, that demonization is not the way to go. Misunderstanding and mischaracterizing the other--is a difficult obstacle to overcome--and a crying shame when done on purpose. It may be hard work to have the conversations that are involved enough to really understand . And maybe even more challenging, on occassion, to find the commonalities. If we don't do the work, though, I think we are dooming ourselves.

Dan K. Thomasson WORDS ARE WELL WRITTEN. My father comes from a long line of Republicans. Today's party would be unrecognizable to my great grandparents. My mother's family were FDR Democrats. I was exposed to the principls of each party. It was 1972, age 21, when I first registered to vote (before the age to vote was lowered to 18). I registered with the Peace and Freedom Party. I've become more conservative over the last 40+ years and am now a registered Democrat. Third parties have influenced our politics in many of our elections in my time. George Wallace, American Independent, Dr. Spock, Peace and Freedom, Ralph Nader, Green Party, and all the others. Will the Tea Party replace the GOP? Probably not. Dialogue is needed. Not confrontation and demonetization. Compromise, and consensus are the means by which these United States have moved forward, not control by a cadre of the elite commanding an ill informed collection of ever diminishing voters. Progress to meet the challenges of a new century, to deal with the future, is required. This will not happen if the primary goal of a major party is trying to roll back the progress of the 20th century and resurrect a past that left every person to fend for themselves.
