Sound off for Oct. 20, 2013
The Fairfield City Council last week voted it investigate the possibility of merging the local bus system with one serving Benicia and Vallejo.
Here are some comments on the article previewing the meeting:
- Some sense of cohesion is the only way our world is going to survive an increasing population. The days of half-acre lots and big automobiles is gone. Coordinating services so you don’t have duplication seems pretty reasonable to me.
- Mergers, etc., are fine as long as the commuters benefit. One open issue for years is the parking situation at Fairfield Transportation Center. Lack of parking space doesn’t help commuters. Will the authorities look into it?
- After the Vallejo merger, the quality of service went down, buses were late, buses always smelled like urine. How does this play into the study? Why would Fairfield want to hand over their quality operation to Soltrans, who at recent meetings admitted they have had problems down in Vallejo? This has the stinky smell of a political power play coming from the Solano Transportation Authority.
