Last week, we asked whether readers agreed with a Los Angeles judge’s decision concerning teacher tenure.
Here are some comments from our website:
- I think there is a happy medium to be had regarding tenure. It doesn’t have to be either/or.
- School administrators have a very hard time getting rid of ineffective teachers and if they did get rid of that teacher, the union would get their jobs back. Just like with communism, everyone is equal, so there is no incentive to do a good job.
- We could let parents choose what school they want to send their children to, use their own tax money (voucher) and make up the rest if they choose to pick a more expensive school. I think the better schools would bubble up to the top and the lower schools would fall to the bottom.
- While I agree that teachers work at what they do, it’s hard to support tenure. After all, is there another profession that won’t fire you after a certain number of years? If I had to agree for a time span, I would think at least five year; in this manner at least the teacher would know if she loved teaching or wasn’t cut out for it.
