Sound off for Dec. 22, 2013
Solano County Superintendent of Schools Jay Speck wrote a column last week about the new Common Core State Standards.
Here are some comments from our website:
- Jay, you have been sipping the punch from government control over our education system too much. Another government program that will be deemed a failure after the implementation and reviewing results over the next five to 10 years. Why do you think so many kids are now going to private schools that are not tied to these government controlled programs?
- Common Core only makes sense to those who benefit from consolidating the authority of educating kids. Parents have no oversight, teachers have no authority and must teach to the test, administrators are more concerned about test performance and getting the next grant. Common Core makes no sense if the goal is to teach the kid how to think, not what to think.
- This subject has become a political football and the right wing, in its typical fashion, does not accept it. Even those least-informed opponents of Common Core should be able to understand the importance of it now. They won’t of course, but they should.
