Wine aficionados know that you don’t have to leave Solano County to get a taste of Napa Valley.
That’s because Suisun Valley is right here in our backyard.
The Daily Republic begins a four-part series Sunday on Suisun Valley that promises to give readers, whether they love wine or not, something to talk about. Yes, it’s the dead of winter, but there’s plenty of action in the valley’s vineyards and orchards. Options exist to sample local produce and to support local businesses.
There are also beautiful vistas to enjoy, and wine that’s ready for the tasting.
Solano County has big plans for Suisun Valley. It’s destined to become a tourist destination in its own right, rather than a side trip for those headed to or from the Napa Valley. The Suisun Valley Appellation was recognized in 1982 by the federal government. Local growers are working together on a number of fronts to establish the region as a destination, while also competing to bring their wines to market.
There’s also a detailed county road map to establish Suisun Valley as an agritourism area, with specific locations set aside for commercial ventures that help support the needs of tourists, such as shopping and dining.
We’re blessed to live in an area that boasts such a bounty of opportunities. Suisun Valley is but one of the region’s gems, one that already shines but should shine brighter still in years to come.
Look for more on the Suisun Valley this spring, summer and fall. In the meantime, take a drive through the valley and see everything that’s there to enjoy. Then prepare to return in the spring, summer and fall.
