Cheers, jeers for the week of Jan. 29 to Feb. 4, 2012

Cheers to the selection of Vacaville singer Courtney Roberts to sing at a pair of Super Bowl pre-parties this weekend in Indianapolis.

Roberts, 19, who goes by the stage name of Courtney Page, has been singing since she was 4. She started writing songs at 11 and learned to play the guitar at 16.

We’re proud of her accomplishments at such a young age, and wish her all the best.

Jeers to the fact that Fairfield has already experienced its second homicide of the year, both the result of overnight shootings.

Jesus Amaya, 20, of Fairfield, was shot late Wednesday night on the 1000 block of Hayes Street. Police arrived to the scene to find him unconscious in the front yard of a home there. He was taken to NorthBay Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Amaya’s killing comes less than a month after the Jan. 7 shooting death of Quincy Quinney, 26, of Suisun City. That shooting occurred at an apartment complex at 2000 Clay Bank Road.

Both killing remain under investigation.

We, as a community, must work together to stop the violence that thus far in 2012 has left these two young men dead. To turn a blind eye to the violence is nothing short of criminal itself.

Cheers to news that the much-anticipated Lowe’s home improvement store on North Texas Street is open for business.

The project has been years in the making. The city literally moved earth, if not heaven, to make it a reality. The end result is a spanking new, 94,000-square-foot homeowner’s dream.

The store had a soft opening last Thursday and will celebrate its formal grand opening this coming Thursday.

Lowe’s joins Orchard Supply Hardware and Home Depot in the Fairfield home improvement marketplace.

  1. Hey all, speaking to the shooting in more general terms, did you see where Mayor’s Bloomberg and Menino formed the Mayors Against Illegal Guns (MAIG), bought Super Bowl ads and are touting gun control? Wow, talk about a hot button issue! I’m not a gun guy and really don’t have an argument for or against, but the NRA folks and joe-above-average gun owner/hunter is going to snap. The blogs are all ready going crazy.

    • Bloomberg is a nut-job. Is he against “illegal guns,” or all guns? I’m a member of NRA and a multiple gun owner. Guess what? I’m against “illegal guns,” too. The problem is, Bloomberg and the rest of your average anti-gun fools are dead set on eventually making any and all guns “illegal.” This is why folks get upset. We know what the REAL anti -gun agenda is. And, Obama/Holder are pushing it hard–quietly, US-wide and world-wide through the U.N. It ain’t gonna happen.

      • tcc43, You’re NRA? Shocking. Only illegal guns just like Obama, Holder and any other intelligent leaders want.

        • That’s what I said, CD. The devil in the details is the eventual definition of a “legal” gun. The battle between gun-rights folks vs anti-gun folks boils down to that. Your heroes want ALL guns to be declared illegal. You do see my point, don’t you?

  2. CD: The Second Amendment to the Constitution is there for a very specific reason. Not as the Maximum Leader and Eric Holder lie about (organized and state-controlled militias and so forth) but so the the clowns in Washington will always be reminded that the citizenry is armed. Our “leaders” have forgotten Patrick Henry’s words: “The Constitution is not an instrument for the government to restrain the people, it is an instrument for the people to restrain the government…” “Nuff said.

    • FDC, NO! You are wrong and committing more FOX-isms attributed to Obama. You must check your facts he did NOT say he was taking guns away! If you had followed my very astute comments, which you didn’t bother to check the first time and blew me off, you would have known Sir, that certain of your Tea Party candidates Perry and Bachmann et al, wanted to open the Constitution so they could make the changes they thought appealed to the rest of your amazingly uninformed party. OH! Sorry, there goes your whole Constitution argument! Now we all know it isn’t that simple, but it was their idea, I’m just getting you up to speed. Please look for yourself and stop repeating those long ago manufactured lies.

  3. CD: If you would get off your astutes and do just a smidgen more research you will find that both Obama and Holder (you were unclear as to which “he” you referred to) you will find multiple instances in which the individual’s right to keep and bear arms (direct quote) has been questioned by either and both of the “he’s” we are talking about. That aside, you have set up multiple straw men and knocked them down with your “astute comments” (Behold, you plebes, they are self described as VERY astute comments). When I wrote, I thought we were more or less on the same side although I knew you would bristle that I dared comment on your Beloved Maximum Leader and his Attorney General. And once more, you showed your complete ignorance of the hopes and aspirations of your fellow citizens who drift in and out of that movement called the Tea Party. And if you think my argument about what the Constitution says and how the Second Amendment is in there and why it was considered important enough to be ranked Second of the 10 amendments then you are all bluff and bluster without any real knowledge of our Constitution. Do some reading, starting with the Federalist Papers. Alas, I fear your ideology will prevent you from admitting any merit lies in our Constitution and in the thinking of its framers. Too bad.

    • FDC, I still think think you are all right but your ignorance is glaring. You obviously are unable to comprehend the facts as presented. Direct quote? This should fill you in on the real truth and the lies behind wherever you’re hearing this junk. But here it is one more time, yawn:

      http://factcheck.org/2008/09/nra-targets-obama/

Your argument about the second amendment is incoherant. I didn’t question that or your interpretation of it at all, where did that come from?Read again, I stated that your party members wanted to change the Constitution but you ignored that…again. C’mon, if you’re going to slam me at least get it right. Wise up.

  4. You made it clear you have not even read the Second Amendment because the “direct quote” is “…the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” Got it? And you set up the straw man that “…your party members wanted to change the Constitution…”. No, CD, by saying that you once more display a profound ignorance of just what the citizens’ movement called the Tea Party is. There is no “party” and no one has proposed changing the Constitution. Again, I think we may be in some agreement on the issue and are not communicating clearly to each other but I just cannot stand by while you “slam” the patriotic citizens who dare to challenge the Beloved Maximum Leader and his band of merry thieves.

  5. FDC, why do you insist upon saying I haven’t read the second amendment? I never said I did and never questioned that article. My point was your insinuation that Obama wants to get rid of guns. Are we in the twilight zone here?

Yes, some of your Tea Party candidates wanted to change the language in the Constitution. Since you don’t know that, your arguments are without merit. You should read more.

And please, enough of the Maximum Leader nonsense, it spells out your “evidence” and where you learned to parrot your faulty logic.

  6. Night all!

    • Sleep well, CD. Your household will probably remain safe tonight because the average would-be intruder will hesitate before breaking in because he will not know for sure whether or not you are armed. If ALL guns are outlawed, he won’t need to guess, will he?

      • I don’t know who here thinks 1) all guns should be outlawed, or 2) a gun is the homeowner’s (or renter’s) only defense. At least I’m from a long line of Jars who “get” that.

      • See this is the problem here. All I did was mention a story about two Mayors wanting to take on gun control. I did not take a side I basically said it was going to be interesting. The organization should be called Paranoid Gun Owners Association. That’s the trouble with you guys, you’re wound too tight.

tcc43, don’t worry about me, I never think about that stuff. I have never owned a gun, never had any reason to. Got it tough guy? I have no problem with gun ownership, so stop with the snarky responses.

  7. You are right, CD. I goaded you, you punched my buttons, and off we went. I apologize for the heat and hope that we can get back on track with simple arguments using verbs and nouns and no adjectives or adverbs. OK?

  8. FDC, you don’t need to apologize to me, I probably deserve a beating once in awhile! I do appreciate your offer and would certainly like to continue as before. Have a nice evening and thank you!
