Cheers that the Kroc Center in Suisun City was able to serve as the venue this week for the 2013 Plug-In & Electric Vehicle Showcase, which brought industry bigwigs and cutting-edge electric vehicles to Solano County for a one-day program.
A shiny black Tesla Model S, Motor Trend’s Car of the Year, was among the vehicles on display. BMW’s Active E, the new Toyota Prius, Chevy Volt, Chevy Spark and an electric mini utility truck were also on display.
Event organizer Richard Battersby said Suisun City was selected because of its prime location between the Bay Area and Sacramento.
It looks like the Kroc Center may have been the missing piece to put Suisun City on the map as a venue for regional activities. We should all be happy if that proves to be the case.
Cheers that various groups are continuing their work to address senior homelessness in Solano County.
The latest effort was a forum this week that follows up on a December forum that identified gaps in services to the senior homeless population. Those service gaps were identified in the areas of mental heath, substance abuse, transportation and housing. Various speakers gave insight as to the state of services in the county.
The numbers are stark.
Of the 1,635 people pinpointed as being homeless in Solano County in 2012, 47 percent were over the age of 45, according to statistics from the county’s Homeless Management Information System. Twenty-one percent were over the age of 55. Nationally, only 8 percent of all homeless people are 55 and older, said PJ Davis of Community Action Partnership of Solano, Inc.
Jeers that we have such a high percentage of seniors among the ranks of the homeless.
Cheers to Marci Coglianese, former mayor of Rio Vista, for her many years of dedicated service to her community.
Coglianese was the guest of honor Wednesday at a special event hosted by the Rio Vista Democratic Club and attended by local and regional political figures.
She served as mayor from 1997 to 2004. She also served on numerous committees, recently chairing the city’s Army Base Steering Committee.
