A recent article (Feb. 20, “Thomson wants Solano supervisors to discuss salary, benefits cuts”) stated that Solano County Supervisor Skip Thomson asked that the issue of whether the supervisors should reduce their salaries and benefits be discussed at a future meeting. As he rightly pointed out, supervisors should take the lead and cut their own salaries and benefits before asking employees to take further cuts.
I wish to congratulate Mr. Thomson for honoring the promise he made during his campaign. His view on this issue was the reason I voted for him and put his campaign sign on my front lawn.
Unfortunately, his fellow supervisor, Jim Spering, does not have the same sense of fairness. Therefore, he will be able to block Thomson’s effort. He seems to have the attitude that it is OK to ask employees, who earn considerably less than him, to take cuts but there is no way he is going to take a cut in his pay or benefits.
