Now that Thanksgiving is in the rear view mirror and with Christmas just around the corner, it’s the time of year many of us reflect upon our blessings and express thanks to those who make our lives better.
I’d like to express my gratitude to the men and women of the Suisun City Fire Department for their dedication and service to our community. These well-trained volunteers have been protecting our lives and property for more than 100 years.
Suisun City citizens need to be thankful for the $3 million that this volunteer fire department saves the city each year. That is the amount similar-sized communities set aside in annual budgets for a full-time staff of paid firefighters. It does not include the costs of benefits and retirement. In Suisun City, this service is provided at a fraction of the cost and our fire service is second to none.
As the former mayor, I can say that Suisun City’s budget would be in the red and the city possibly facing bankruptcy if we had a paid fire department. Suisun City has been blessed with fire captains who understand the important role the volunteer fire department plays and without their support, Suisun City couldn’t balance its budget and provide much-needed services to the community.
I want to shout out to the Suisun City Fire Department and say thank you for their service to our community. The next time you see a Suisun City volunteer firefighter, let them know how much you appreciate their hard work and dedication to keeping our community safe.
Jim Spering
Solano County Supervisor
Former mayor of Suisun City
