“Mary” is 85 years old and raised her family in Solano County. When her husband retired, they moved into a mobile home, which was affordable on their fixed income. Since the death of her husband, she has managed pretty well, but last month she spent a few days in the hospital. When she came home, she was no longer able to prepare meals, and was referred to Meals on Wheels.
Now a friendly volunteer stops by every weekday around noon, to deliver a tasty and nutritious meal, and this is a lifeline for her. “Mary” represents a typical client for Meals on Wheels of Solano County. She could be your neighbor or a member of your family. AARP estimates it costs about $8 per meal to provide a home-delivered meal.
The Area Agency on Aging Serving Napa and Solano was established in 1980 and uses federal and state funds to support local community-based organizations, such as Meals on Wheels. The Area Agency on Aging board is concerned that current funding from government sources is diminishing at a time when the numbers and needs of seniors are increasing.
Last year, more than 120,000 meals were delivered to 875 home-bound seniors, and another 850 seniors had lunch at senior centers in Solano County. Due to reductions in federal funding (sequestration cuts, etc.) and increased costs of meal production, it had been projected that 15,000 fewer home-delivered meals would be provided this year. Despite additional fundraising efforts, Meals on Wheels has found it necessary to reduce days of meal service at some sites. We are blessed to live in a generous community, and we encourage individuals and civic-minded organizations to step up and support these programs.
Donations to the Area Agency on Aging will be directed to Meals on Wheels to meet the current need. Please consider sponsoring a senior for a week ($25) or a month ($100). Send your donations to: “Senior Food – Solano” – Area Agency on Aging, P.O. Box 3069, Vallejo, CA 94590.
On behalf of the board of directors for the Area Agency on Aging Serving Napa and Solano, I thank you for your support!
