I wanted to be fair and balanced. So I watched Fox News on the eve of the government shutdown. Here are the two strongest points I heard Republicans make.
Well, let’s fact-check, shall we?
The Affordable Care Act actually specifically requires members of Congress and their direct staff to enroll in the ACA exchanges like everyone else. Republican Tom Coburn wrote the amendment. The other claim, that the ACA will bankrupt the country pits the Congressional Budget Office – respected by both parties – against Rush Limbaugh, et al. The CBO has repeatedly stated that the law will save lots of money. So who do you believe?
These two Republican claims can be described differently by different people. A philosopher might call them “sophistries.” A religious person might call them “bearing false witness.” A person talking over coffee might call them lies.
I left the Republican Party after 45 years of party-line voting. The party was leading us in a destructive way. It’s only getting worse.
