Most folks ignore my traffic letters, but I will keep writing because we’re failing and traffic crime is so prevalent. Of course, so many of you practice these offenses and have no clue how dangerous your actions are. I hope none of us have to find that out at the expense of innocent lives.
Most of you are lucky that kids stay off the streets because they’re playing video games but that is a letter for another day. I’m all for DUI checkpoints and I think they should continue. But I think they have become a sideshow.
More checkpoints, fewer patrols daily on the streets. The bigger problem is completely ignored and that is daily traffic violations. Traffic patrols would find the same issues as checkpoints and write citations (providing revenue) for the pathetic driving practices we see around town. Heck, they might even get people to realize there really are laws against speeding and running stop signs.
Just curious, do any of you know the speed limit on any of the city streets you frequent? Are you aware there actually are speed limits? There are a few scattered 40-45 mph but most are 30-35 mph and all residential areas are 25 mph. Now you know so you can observe them without harassing folks like me who are simply obeying the law. Stop tailgating, gesturing and passing me (really stupid) in residential areas.
I’m going to take a wild guess and say there are probably a lot of folks driving during the day who shouldn’t be and avoiding checkpoints. Who knows what they’re hauling around, what drug or alcohol they consumed or whether they even have a license? You think the bad guys don’t have enough sense to stay home at night after a good day of business? Guns and drugs are probably running back and forth freely due to inattention. Checkpoints alone will not solve those issues.
