Commending Betty Catania for her letter

By From page A8 | November 26, 2012

I want to commend Betty Catania for her clear and historically accurate portrayal of the many contributions liberals have made to our society.

She also attracted at least two detractors. Their criticisms both shared the same flaw; they took Ms. Catania’s discussion of political viewpoints and transformed it into one of political parties. It was clear Ms. Catania was referring to the time-honored definitions of the terms liberal and conservative.

When you misread someone’s statements and change the terms that the writer used, you invalidate your own argument. Their error was compounded by the dramatic changes both major political parties have undergone over the past 150 years. For example, Republican Teddy Roosevelt, “The Truth Buster,” would never have run on the Ronald Reagan or Mitt Romney platforms.

To enjoy a meaningful intellectual discussion, it is necessary to read carefully and accurately.

It's "Trust Buster," but other than that, fine letter. Was the typo the author's or the DR's?
