Assemblyman thanks CHP

By From page A11 | October 02, 2013

I would like to thank Capt. Sam Dickson, the officers, Explorers and staff of the California Highway Patrol for their unwavering dedication and contribution to public safety.

I had the recent honor of partnering with the CHP to conduct a child safety seat inspection at their facilities in Fairfield. The CHP and I assisted in the inspection and installation of 28 car seats, including six inspections that resulted in brand new car seat exchanges. Their knowledge of proper child safety seat installation was extremely impressive.

Thousands of children are injured or killed every year by safety seats that are improperly fastened by parents or caretakers. Most collisions occur within a mile of the home. Therefore, buckling children in a safety seat for every trip, no matter how short, is imperative. If you’re not confident about how to properly secure your child in a safety seat, contact our local CHP area office at 428-2100 and set up an appointment for a lesson. Please remember that:

  • Children under the age of 1 are required to ride in a rear-facing car seat in the back seat, although national recommendations are to keep children rear-facing until age 2.
  • Children under the age of 8 must be secured in a car seat or booster seat in the back seat.
  • Children age 8 or older, or who are 4 feet 9 inches tall or taller, may use the vehicle seat belt if it fits properly.
  • All children are safest when they are properly restrained, in the back seat, until age 13.

The CHP has my sincere appreciation for their exemplary stewardship of public safety and dedication to the safety of our community.

Assemblyman Jim Frazier
