May 5, 1918 — March 7, 2013Velma Shepard Maddox was born May 5, 1918 in Mapleton, N.D. She passed away peacefully on March 7, 2013.
Velma received a bachelor’s of art degree from William Penn College and an master’s in art degree from Sacramento State. She had a passion for teaching and her dream was to make learning interesting. She taught in Iowa for six years and 20 years at Center School at Travis Air Force Base.
She married Harold Shepard in 1941 and they had three children, David, of Salem, Ore., Philip of San Jose and Bonnie Shepard King of Lincoln, Calif.
In 1965 Velma met her second husband, Gilbert Maddox through her work on the membership committee of the Community United Methodist Church in Fairfield. Together they were lay members of the California Nevada Conference for many years.
Velma was a member of the AAUW, California Retired Teachers Association and a Hospice group.
She is survived by her three children and spouses, David and Christine Shepard, Phil and Kathy Shepard and Bonnie and David King; six grandchildren, Jeff Shepard, Erin Lewis, Wendy Fry, Tom Shepard, Eric King and Cari King; and 11 great-grandchildren. Both husbands preceded her in death.
Viewing will be 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday, March 14, 2013 followed by the funeral service at 1:00 pm at Bryan-Baker Funeral Home, 1850 W Texas Street, Fairfield, CA.
In lieu of flowers, gifts may be given to Alzheimer Association, Northern California, 1060 La Avenida Street, Mountain View, CA 94043.
