Steven Strouse passed away peacefully on Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013, at his home in Fairfield with his wife Lauren by his side, after a ten-month struggle with cancer. He will be remembered for his positive attitude, grace, strength and courage during this challenging time. Steve was born in Long Beach to Betty and John Strouse. He was the youngest of seven children.
Steve was a kind, gentle soul who cared deeply about others. He married later in life and never had children of his own so his wife and step-daughters meant the world to him. He had a wry, sometimes silly sense of humor, loved to garden and grow flowers, fish, and most of all spend time with family and friends. He was famous for both his peanut butter cookies and his obsession with elephants. In fact, his passion for collecting led his wife to issue a “no more elephants,” edict to family and friends!
Steve was a recovered methamphetamine addict and at one time had been homeless. He never forgot this part of his life and was dedicated to helping others which is why he loved his job at the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano where he was employed for the past ten years and up until the time of his illness.
He is survived by the love of his life, wife Lauren; step-daughters, Theresa and Rachel Troth; mother, Betty; brother, David (Jennifer); sisters, Marie Taylor (Carl), Carol Hawthorne (Randy), Joann Springer (Dennis); and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, John; and sisters, Theresa and Laura.
The family would like to thank Kaiser Hospice, Vacaville Kaiser Oncology, and all of Steve’s doctors at Vacaville Kaiser, for their help and support during Steve’s illness.
A “Celebration of Life,” will be held at the family home from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013. A period of tribute and reflection will occur at 1:30 p.m. For information please call 707-425-6452.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Kaiser Hospice, the American Cancer Society, or the Solano SPCA.
