Muriel Mae Birkland, born June 20, 1925, passed away suddenly at her home in Suisun on March 9, 2013.
Muriel was born in Newark, N.J. and later moved to Livingston, N.J., where she grew up with her eight brothers and sisters. She met her future husband, Gerald N. Birkland, during WWII while he was stationed at Fort Dix, N.J., awaiting deployment to Europe. Muriel and Gerald were married in January 1946, shortly after he returned from the war. Gerald eventually rejoined the Air Force and together they had many wonderful experiences traveling the world and through out the United States. They eventually settled in Suisun City and enjoyed 55 years of marriage.
Muriel was always a people person and very active in the community. She served as a volunteer at the David Grant Medical Center for more than 20 years while also devoting time to the Suisun Senior Center and a local food charity. She continued to enjoy traveling and was a long time member of the Red Hat Society. Foremost, Muriel was a loving and devoted homemaker for her husband and three sons.
She is survived by her three sons and their families, Dana, of Racine, Wis.; Scott, of Fairfax, Va.; and Greg, of Pittsburgh, Pa.
Muriel was proceeded in death by her husband, Gerald; and all her siblings.
Muriel will be laid to rest with her loving husband at the Sacramento National Cemetery, 5810 Midway Road, Dixon.
A memorial service is pending.
