May 23, 1988 — Feb. 11, 2014

It is with a breaking heart that my son, Matthew “Matt” Alan North, 25, died on Feb. 11, 2014.

Matthew, the son of a baseball player, was born May 23, 1988, in St. Petersburg, Fla. At the age of 4, the family moved to Vacaville when his father became a baseball scout for the St. Louis Cardinals. Matthew played his first two years at Will C. Wood, before transferring to Deer Valley High for his junior and senior seasons. In 2006, Matthew was a ninth-round selection in the Major League Baseball draft. The St. Louis Cardinals made him the 286th pick in the draft. He played in the Cardinals organization from 2006 to 2010, before a career-ending injury halted his professional playing days. He received Appalachian League Pitcher of the week in 2008 and played under the coaching of current St. Louis Cardinals pitching coach, Derek Lilliquist. Matt earned All-Bay Valley Athletic League honors at Deer Valley, while being selected as a Puma Pre-Season All American. He followed in his father’s footsteps, working with local athletes and teaching them about the fundamentals of pitching and baseball. He was the pitching coach at Diablo Valley College for the 2012-13 season and then became the pitching coach at Solano Community College for the 2013-14 season.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jay North; and aunt, Sharon Jeffords. He leaves behind his heartbroken mother, Anni North; girlfriend, Taylor Montoya; beloved Mema, Dorene Buchan (Don); uncles, Les (Linda), Bill (Pat), Chuck (Roberta), Gary (Robin); aunt, Gail; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday Feb. 17, 2014, at McCune Garden Chapel, 212 Main Street, Vacaville, Calif. Interment will be private.

Arrangements under the care of McCune Garden Chapel.
