Matt Kawabe, 93, a Fairfield resident for 45 years, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, Sept. 23, 2013. Matt was born on Jan. 8, 1920, in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Jihei and Kikuyo. He served in World War II in the Japanese-American 442nd Regimental combat team in Europe. He was a combat medic and was awarded (among other honors) two Presidential Merit Citations and a Congressional Gold Medal in 2010.
Matt retired from the U.S. Air Force Civil Service after 35 years of service in 1976. He spent his retirement playing golf, gardening, taking walks and enjoyed watching sports on television.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Ruth; his only son, Tom; daughter-in-law, Karen; and great-grandchild, Katalya.
Committal service with military honors will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013, at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery, 5810 Midway Road, Dixon.
