Mary Young

March 20, 1923 — June 28, 2014

Mary Sumiko Young entered into eternal rest on Saturday, June 28, 2014. She was 91.

Mary was born March 20, 1923, to Gensai Erabu and Ishikame Shige in Kagoshima-Ken, Japan. There she met the love of her life, William “Bill” Young, who was serving in the military and they were married Aug. 1, 1955. Bill and Mary returned to the United States, where Mary attended classes and became a citizen on Nov. 10, 1960.

Mary was a regular at daily Mass and the 7:30 a.m. Mass on Sundays at Holy Spirit Church in Fairfield. She was active in The Legion of Mary as well as being a Eucharistic Minister, providing care to the sick and homebound. Mary was generous and kind and would end each encounter she had with, “OK, thank you, have a nice day!”

Mary’s main goal in life was to take care of Bill, which she did up to his passing last year. She was a wonderful wife, partner and friend. I don’t believe anyone could ever say “Bill” without adding “and Mary.” When Mary was happy, you could often hear her singing in her native tongue as she did her chores. Although Mary was short in stature, she stood shoulders above us all when it came to being a good person. She will be greatly missed.

A visitation will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. Sunday, July 6, 2014, with rosary to be recited at 5 p.m. at Fairfield Funeral Home, 1750 Pennsylvania Ave., Fairfield. The Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday, July 7, 2014, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 1050 N. Texas St., Fairfield. Interment will follow at Fairmont Memorial Park, 1901 Union Ave., Fairfield.

Arrangements under the care of Fairfield Funeral Home, 707-425-1041.

I so miss Mary sitting in her favorite pew. It's just not 7am weekday Mass nor 730 Sunday Mass without her and Bill! I know Bill welcomed her with open arms in Heaven, now together for Eternity.
