Luvenia Manley Shaw was born on Dec. 19, 1919, in Pace, Miss. to the union of Tom and Clarinda Manley. She passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2013, in Fairfield.
Luvenia attended public schools in Cleveland, Miss. In the early 1940s, she moved to Rosedale, Miss. where she married and started her family. After becoming a widow, Luvenia raised her children on her own.
She was very active in the civil rights movement in the 1960s. She had many meetings in her home and members from up North staying in her home at times. She was a hard worker in many causes she believed in. She was instrumental in starting the Head Start Program in Rosedale. She taught herself to become a midwife and delivered many babies in Bolivar and surrounding counties.
In 1968, Luvenia moved her family from Mississippi to Fairfield. She joined Mount Calvary Baptist Church where she remained a member until her death. While at Mount Calvary, Luvenia taught Sunday school, sang in the choir and was a member of the Mission Circle.
After all of her children left home, Luvenia enjoyed traveling. She loved going on long trips for months at a time. She enjoyed such places as Michigan, Illinois, Germany, Paris, Italy and London. She also enjoyed playing bingo with her friends at Parkway Plaza.
Luvenia was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, all seven of her siblings, and by her aunts and uncles. She was also preceded in death by seven of her children, R.B., Willie, Pearlie, Levester, Barbara, Willie Lee and Jimmie. She leaves to cherish her memory her remaining children, John (Rose), Evelyn (R.T.), Ollie, Katie, Edna,and Gwen (Emmanuel), and one godson, Fulton. She is also survived by 44 grandchildren, 97 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-great-grandchild, and a host of nieces and nephews and many friends. She is also survived by her three special friends, Octavia, Minnie and Joyce.
She will be greatly missed by all of us.
