May 1, 1918 — Feb. 6, 2013

Linda Shirley Barnett, a long-time resident of Vacaville, was taken by the angels to her Heavenly Father on Feb, 6, 2013, after a long illness. She was 94 years old. Shirley was born to the late Clarence Eugene and Malinda Kitura Hearst on May 1, 1918, in Washington, D.C.

While attending American University in Washington, D.C., she earned extra income by modeling and as a congressional aide. During World War II, she was an executive secretary at the State Department. In 1943 she married the late William Ross Barnett and spent the next 21 years as a Navy wife, raising two children and living at various states and overseas locations. In 1961 they settled in Concord and Walnut Creek, Calif. Bill and Shirley finally retired to Vacaville in 1978, where they made their home.

Shirley loved music, the theater, participated in numerous stage productions and shows while a resident of Leisure Town and Merrill Gardens. She was active with the Women’s Club and had wonderful bridge parties. Shirley was also known for her devotion to her family, her loving disposition, and her positive outlook on life. The family thanks the staff at Vacaville Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center for their professionalism and devotion to our mother.

Shirley is survived by two children, Cindy Ross Jagger (Jim) of Suisun City, Calif., and William Eugene Barnett (Mary) of Williamsburg, Va.; three grandchildren, Michael Brian Jagger (Tricia), Elisabeth Barnett Shenoy (Rajeev) and Mabry Barnett Ray (Joe); and, four great-grandchildren.

The family plans to hold a private memorial service to celebrate her life at a later date. Condolences can be referred to Vaca Hills Chapel Funeral Home, 524 Elmira Road, Vacaville. 707-446-3233, www.vacahillschapel.com.
