Lestel passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014, at Kaiser Hospital in Vallejo.
A native of Chandler, Okla., Lestel joined the United States Air Force in 1947. Lestel’s military career took him all over the United States and the world, from Korea to Okinawa, Alaska and finally to Travis Air Force Base before retiring in Fairfield, where he resided for the past 42 years. “Mac” met his wife, Theresa, in West Palm Beach, Fla., where they were married on Sept. 4, 1955.
After retiring as a Master Sergeant in the USAF in 1971, Lestel went on to receive a master’s degree in business from Golden Gate University. “Mac” worked as an auditor for the state of California, Department of Agriculture for 17 years. Lestel earned his private pilot’s license in 1981 and loved taking his family for flights around Northern California whenever he had a chance, departing from the Travis Aero Club.
Lestel is remembered lovingly by his sister, Nona McElfresh; brother, Donald McElfresh; wife of 58 years, Theresa; son, Michael McElfresh and wife Alice; their children, Joshua, Sara and Benjamin; son, David McElfresh and wife Kate; their children, Johanna and Laura; daughter, Isabelle Voit and husband Norbert; their children, Jeremiah and Anna, her husband Tommy and their daughter Autumn Claire, Lestel’s first great grandchild, who was born Jan. 17, 2014.
A private memorial service will be held on Friday, Feb. 7, 2014, with an open house reception to follow from 4 to 6 p.m. at Fairfield Presbyterian Church, 2100 Pennsylvania Ave., Fairfield, Calif. 94533.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to The American Red Cross in Lestel’s memory.
