Nov. 23, 1926 — Aug. 11, 2014

Karolina Corneau, known as Karola to her friends, passed away on Aug. 11, 2014, at David Grant Medical Center. She was 87.

She was born Nov. 23, 1926, in Altenmarkt, Germany, to Wilhelm and Fanny Proff.

Karola met her late husband of 60 years, James Edward Corneau in Rupholding, Germany, at a vacation resort where she worked. Their first encounter was an argument. Jim had called Ruhpolding a “little old village,” but she quickly straightened him out. That first meeting evolved to love and they soon married and made their way back to the United States.

Karola and Jim had many adventures throughout their life together. They lived in Missouri and Alaska before making their permanent home in Fairfield. She received her American citizenship and worked for 20 years for the Army/Air Force Exchange before retiring. She also spent time volunteering her time at David Grant Medical Center at Travis Air Force Base.

They spent their years traveling all over the world. They often said that no matter what happened in life, their years of traveling together were memories that would always be cherished.

Karola enjoyed her retirement years swimming and socializing at her health club, taking trips with the Fairfield Senior Center, worshiping at the United Methodist Church and enjoying the company of her family and friends.

Karola is survived by her daughters, Birdie Corneau Griffin and Kim Corneau Dombrowsky; grandchildren, Ryan Griffin, Tyler Dombrowsky, Eric Dombrowsky and Birdie’s adopted son, Fernando Gonzales-Romero; daughter-in-law, Tracey Griffin; and great-grandchildren, Savannah Carvajal and Tegan Griffin.

Karola was preceded in death by her husband, James Edward Corneau.

There will be a gathering of friends and family at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2014, at the Sacramento National Cemetery in Dixon.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the City of Fairfield, Fairfield Senior Center, Federal ID# 94-6000331, 1000 Webster St., Fairfield, Calif., 94533 or to The Community United Methodist Church, 1875 Fairfield Ave., Fairfield, Calif., 94533, in her memory.

Arraignments under the care of Bryan-Braker Funeral Home, 707-425-4697 or www.bryanbraker.com.
