James Burrell

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a bright and determined spirit, beloved husband and father, James Burrell at age 79. He lived a long and fulfilling life.

Loving husband of 58 years to Joetta Burrell. James served proudly and with distinction for 20 years in the United States Air Force and later earned his BA degree in Psychology from Sonoma State University.

After retiring from the Air Force, he worked for the California Employment Development Department, retiring after 20 years of service.

James helped found Sonoma County’s first Black Businessmen’s Association, served as VP and instructor of the Coast Guard Auxiliary of California, and was a member of Toastmasters International.

James was predeceased in death by his parents, Juan and Mary Arca; and his beloved son, James Burrell, Jr;

He is survived by his wife, Joetta Burrell of Suisun City; daughter, Yolanda (Terence Parker) of Oakland; and son, Marc (Kristin) of Suisun City; He leaves four beautiful grandchildren, Hunter James, Evan James, Aaliyah Nicole and Thelonious James; who were very dear to his heart. Also left to remember him are five loving sisters, Mattie Bullen, Marcelina Marcus (Matthew), Mary Williams and Cynthia Williams, of Baltimore, Maryland, Connie Lumpkin (Harry), of The Villages, Florida; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
