Dec. 30, 1926 –  June 10, 2014

Helen Rose Haug, 87, passed away peacefully in her Fairfield home on Tuesday, June 10, 2014, after courageously battling the effects of a massive stroke more than 10 years ago.

Helen was born on Dec. 30, 1926, in Calistoga, Calif., to Tillie and Jacob Heitz. The family later made their home in St. Helena, where she grew up and graduated from St. Helena High School in 1944. After graduating, she went to work at the Louis M. Martini Winery in St. Helena, where she was the secretary to Mr. Martini. She worked there for the next 10 years.

On May 15, 1955, she married the love of her life, Donald R. Haug, from Pope Valley, Calif. They made their first home in Napa, Calif., before moving to Vallejo in 1957. Her husband worked for the Solano County Agriculture Department while Helen stayed home to raise their three daughters. The family moved to Fairfield in 1967, where she later became employed by the Solano County Assessor’s Office and retired in the late 1980s.

She was an avid seamstress whose interests included cooking, camping, playing cards and traveling. She easily made friends wherever she went and never lost her sense of humor and quick wit. She was an active member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, where she enjoyed many friendships.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 59 years, Donald R. Haug; daughters, Elaine Bruno (Tom), Karen Dixon (Roy) and Diane Marcolini; granddaughters, Tara DaMassa and Alicia Castro; grandsons, Jacob Castro, William Bruno and Christopher Bruno; sister, Marie Delbondio (Al); sister-in-laws, Ramona Decker and Thelma Hermes; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her younger sister, Ann Heitz.

At Helen’s request, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to VITAS Innovative Hospice Care, 2710 South Gateway Oaks Drive, Suite 100, Sacramento, Calif. 95833. Please make checks payable to VITAS Community Connection, or to Helen’s favorite Catholic charity, St. Vincent DePaul at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 2700 Dover Ave., Fairfield, Calif. 94533.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 18 at our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 2700 Dover Ave., Fairfield, Calif. A rosary will follow at 10:30 a.m. with a Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. Immediately following the Mass, interment will be at the Holy Cross Cemetery, 2121 Spring St., St Helena, Calif. A light reception will follow at Ramona Decker’s home, 475 Crane Ave., St. Helena, Calif., for anyone who wishes to attend.

Arrangements under the care of Fairfield Funeral Home, 1750 Pennsylvania Ave., Fairfield, Calif. 94533, 707-425-1041.
