Donald Mack Hislip passed away at David Grant Medical Center on Travis AFB, Calif., Jan. 6, 2013, at the age of 76.
He was born to Joylen Whitfield and Carroll Hislip on May 5, 1936, in Porterville, Calif. He spent 18 years of his 21-year enlistment in the United States Air Force as a firefighter. During the height of the Vietnam War, he was cross-trained as a C-141 loadmaster and spent the final three years of his career flying cargo and supplies over Southeast Asia and into Vietnam. After he retired from Luke AFB in Arizona in 1974, he returned to Solano County, where he resided until his death. He spent the next 18 years as the swimming pool maintenance man for the Fairfield-Suisun School District. He was loved and known by all the students as “Don the pool man.”
He is survived by his wife, Devada; five children, Donella Rowland, Devada Rammell, Scott Hislip, Elisabeth Tubbs and Diana Wolf; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three sisters; and one brother. He was preceded in death by his son, Richard.
He will be forever remembered for his sparkling blue eyes, quick wit and generous heart. He was loved by all and will be dearly missed.
Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 14, 2013 at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon. Arrangements by Fairfield Funeral Home, 707-425-1041.
