Della Combs Horn, devoted mother, loving grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away March 7, 2014, in Vacaville following a brief illness and hospital stay. She was 88.
Born to Millie and James Combs in Hazard, Ky., Della was raised in Fairborn, Ohio, where she was one of six children.
In 1946, while working at Wright Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio, she met handsome young pilot Lt. Peter Horn when she refueled his aircraft. The two were married on Aug. 10, 1946, in Topeka, Kan. It was a union that would last 48 years.
Della and Peter had three children and lived in seven different states throughout his military career. He retired as a major in 1968, and they settled in Fairfield, Calif. Peter preceded her in death in 1994.
Della is survived by daughters, Cheryl (David) of Moreno Valley, Pamela (Roy) of Vacaville; son, Peter of Vacaville; grandchildren, Jeff (Nancy) of Ladera Ranch, Aaron (Paula) of Vacaville, Amy (Scott) of Vacaville; and great-grandchildren, Ryan, Hayley, Blake, Bryce, Garrett and Gavin.
Della, a “social butterfly”, was very active in her church, was a fixture at the McBride Senior Center in Vacaville, and was an avid bingo enthusiast. She touched many lives with her warm, welcoming spirit and outgoing personality. She will be greatly missed by those that knew and loved her.
A memorial service will be held at noon Friday, March 14, 2014, at Bethany Lutheran Church, 621 S. Orchard Street, Vacaville. The Rev. Vern Oestmann will officiate.
