Dave was born in Anderson, Ind., to David and Dora Conger. He was the youngest of seven children. After graduation from Anderson High School in 1938, he came to San Francisco. He worked as a laborer for Henry Doelger, a home builder. He returned to Indiana in 1939 and entered Purdue University.
In December 1941, Dave enlisted in the U.S. Air Corps as an Aviation Cadet. He finished pilot training and was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. At the age of 21, he was assigned to the Training Command as a Twin-Engine instructor. During World War II, he was a member of the 8th Air Force and led his squadron over Europe on D-Day. He completed 30 combat missions as a lead pilot in B-17s and B-24s. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross plus the Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters for his service.
On his return from England, he married Anna Shackelford and moved to Vallejo, Calif. In 1945, he started in the real estate business and in October 1946 opened his first office in Vallejo. He was also a partner and owner of real estate offices in Fairfield, Napa and Concord. In addition to the real estate business, Dave was a partner in Conger and Fisk Appraisals. In 1969, he and his partner Les Fisk completed an appraisal of 1,100 parcels on the island of Guam.
His dedication to the real estate profession continued as he lectured throughout the United States, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Canada, Mexico and South Africa. He also taught classes at the Vallejo Evening College, Napa Community College, Solano Community College and the University of California. He wrote a weekly real estate column for the Vallejo Times-Herald.
He was Past President of the Solano Board of Realtors, Chairman of the United Way (Vallejo), Lions Club member, Senior Member of The Society of Real Estate Appraisers (SRA), member of the American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers (MAI), and the California Real Estate Association. He received his Certified Residential Broker (CRB) designation from the National Institute of Real Estate Brokers. He was awarded from the Graduate Realtor Institute (GRI) Certificate Number 3 in California.
Dave’s love of flying and travel continued after the war. Many family trips were made in a Cessena 310. He also enjoyed backpacking, camping, fishing and skiing.
Dave is survived by his wife, Anna; daughters, Daun Herbert (Bill) of Fairfield, Karen Nowakowski (Frank) of Cascade, Mont.; grandchildren, Dennis Herbert (Fairfield), Ashley Barclay (Beaverton, Ore.), Victoria Herbert (Grapevine, Texas), Mallory Keaton (Beaverton, Ore.); and great-grandson, Jackson Barclay (Beaverton, Ore.).
He was predeceased by his son, Bruce Conger; brothers, Paul Conger, Newman Conger and Sidney Conger; and his sisters, Marquerite Farkas, Genevieve Storm and Catherine Lansing.
Visitation is from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15, 2013, at Twin Chapels Mortuary, 1100 Tennessee St., Vallejo, Calif. Memorial service is at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 16, 2013, at Twin Chapels Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Salvation Army or a charity of the donor’s choice.
