Colleen S. Larkin Lavell, longtime resident of Fairfield, left us to join her heavenly Father on Monday, Aug. 12, 2013, after a brief battle with cancer. Colleen was born in Ridgewood, N.J., on July 3, 1940, to Edward and Laura Larkin. She grew up in Ridgewood, attended Loretto Heights College in Denver, Colo.
After college, Colleen stayed in Colorado, was married and gave birth to her son Fred, the family then relocated to Northern California, living in Oakland and Alameda, where son Michael was born before settling in Fairfield, where daughter Karen was born.
During the early 1970s, Colleen worked off and on as a substitute teacher for the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District while raising her three children. In 1978, Colleen returned to work as an aide at Center School located on Travis Air Force Base. In 1984, Colleen was hired to teach 1st grade at Center School and then later she moved to Kindergarten. Colleen enjoyed many years of teaching at Center School with her fellow teachers at Center School’s “A” Wing. Colleen was a founding member of the Our Lady of Mount Carmel parish. She was active in the Divorce/Separated Ministry in the 1980s and later on taught CCD at the church.
Colleen is survived by her sister, Laura Newham of Naperville, Ill.; her brother, Tom Larkin of San Antonio, Texas; her three children, Fred (Pam) Lavell of Sacramento; Mike Lavell of Parker, Colo.; and Karen (Don) Romero of Port Orchard, Wash.; and her five precious grandchildren, Brett, Brooke, Breanne, Colin and Megan.
A Funeral Vigil Service will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19, 2013, with a Rosary prayer at 7 p.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 2700 Dover Ave., Fairfield. A Funeral Holy Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013, also at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Burial will be private.
