Vendors hop to 2nd annual Spring Fling

FAIRFIELD — An army of frogs greeted visitors to the Clubhouse at Rancho Solano, Sunday, for the second annual Spring Fling Boutique.

Some were smoking, some were grinning and some were meditating, but all the frogs at Keith and Sandy Severin’s Custom Ceramics booth were for sale.

The Fairfield couple has been using liquid clay to form outdoor critters for 30 years. Keith Severin said they pour “ceramic slip” in a mold and wait two days for it to dry. Sandy Severin paints the creations, which are fired in a kiln and glazed.

“It’s a dying art,” said Keith Severin. He said there are no longer stores in the area that sell these types of crafts.

The Severins attend 36 shows a year and plan on selling their Custom Ceramics at the Total Home and Garden Show next weekend. Their frogs, toads, alligators and snails are made to last. Sandy Severin said her own ceramic frog has been sitting by her pond for 14 years and it still looks fresh.

“It’s not like resin where it fades,” she said. “This is glaze, fired in.”

Spring Fling organizer Brenda Mossa said all the items at Sunday’s boutique were handcrafted by an estimated 80 vendors in attendance.

Jackie Willis came from Pinole with her batch of Eggs and Crafts. Willis etches, paints and sculpts chicken and goose eggs into ornaments, diaramas and even a hinged jewelry box.

Willis said she would watch her mother make diaramas when she was a child, and Willis picked up the hobby.

“If I can sell a few, that’s good,” she said. “My friends and family got tired of me giving them eggs for gifts.”

With Easter approaching on April 20, Willis was happy to be invited to the Spring Fling.

“Very rarely am I able to find a show at Easter time,” she said. “I do well at holidays.”
