VACAVILLE — A man driving on westbound Interstate 80 died Sunday after he hit a tree near the Cherry Glen Road exit.

The crash was reported shortly after 3:45 p.m.

Battalion Chief Steve Bowman said the driver had to be extricated from the vehicle, which had major front end damage. The victim, an older man, sustained major injuries and was transported by ground ambulance to NorthBay Medical Center, Bowman said.

California Highway Patrol Officer William Ogilvie said the man reportedly died. The CHP website reports that the man’s vehicle overturned several times before landing on its wheels on the right shoulder of the freeway. The CHP website also listed the incident as a fatality.

One lane was shut down by emergency vehicles, which prompted a regional traffic alert shortly after 4 p.m. Traffic backed up for 2 miles, according to the CHP website.

Witnesses said the vehicle just drifted off the freeway – no braking or anything – and hit the oak tree, Bowman said.

The battalion chief responded with two engines, a squad vehicle and an ambulance, Bowman said.
