FAIRFIELD — More than 100 supporters of the Women of Faith Christian Alliance gathered for an evening of service and fellowship, Sunday.
The biennial Black and White Banquet featured a fashion show and other entertainment to benefit the American Cancer Society, the Susan G. Komen Foundation and Mission Solano.
Founded by Eloise Marable in 2004, the faith-based nonprofit supports those struggling in the local community.
“We do our best to comfort, and we spread the gospel of Jesus,” said Marable. “. . . As our motto says, ‘we do walk by faith, and not by sight.’ ”
While donors ate chicken or prime rib inside the Courtyard by Marriott, young women led by Marable’s granddaughter Kurita displayed the latest casual and evening fashions. Other guests included Christian comedian J-Red, of Oakland, and saxophonist Kevin Moore.
Marable said about 140 people attended the benefit with a portion of the proceeds supporting the fight against homelessness and cancer.
“It looks like we will be very successful,” she said.
Women of Faith includes nine members from the Bay Area who represent different churches, Marable said. They have supported organizations such as The Leaven and Fun on the Run and have also donated to organizations that target diabetes and help battered women.
“We have grown tremendously in strength, said Marable. “We’re still growing strong in the Lord.”
The group frequently supports Mission Solano – donating hygiene products in the past.
“Our hearts go out to homeless people,” said Marable. “We support them so they can have supplies and warm blankets.”
Secretary Shirley Powell, of Fairfield, was recruited about five years ago by Women of Faith to help with its outreach.
“It’s very inspiring because we try to do a lot to help in the community,” she said.
Supporting the Susan G. Komen Foundation at Sunday’s banquet was important for Powell, whose daughter Lydia died from breast cancer two years ago.
“This organization is close to my heart,” she said.
