FAIRFIELD — War, The Spinners and Tower of Power will perform at the 2013 Solano County Fair.
Performance dates are Aug. 1, Aug. 2 and Aug. 3, respectively. The fair runs July 31 through Aug. 4. The two remaining acts will be announced soon, according to fair officials.
War blends funk, jazz, R&B and rock ‘n’ roll and has sold more than 50 million albums worldwide. The band is working on its first new record in more than 14 years.
The Spinners are staples on the American music scene. Their hits include “Then Came You” and “One of a Kind (Love Affair.)” Three original members, Henry Fambrough, Pervis Jackson and Bobbie Smith, are still with the band. The Spinners have six Grammy nominations and have performed twice during the awards ceremony.
Tower of Power’s 45-year odyssey began in 1968 when Emilio Castillo met Stephen “Doc” Kupka. When Kupka auditioned during a band rehearsal at Castillo’s house, Castillo’s father called him into the kitchen and offered the following advice: “Hire that guy; he’s got something.”
Based out of their hometown in Oakland, Tower of Power’s big break came after playing at a Tuesday night audition in 1970 at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco. They were signed by rock promoter Bill Graham to his own record label.
Original members Castillo, Rocco Prestia, Kupka and David Garibaldi still perform with the band today.
The concerts are free with fair admission. More information can be found at www.scfair.com.
