UC Davis entomology professor wins own challenge, again

By From page A3 | January 24, 2013

FAIRFIELD — UC Davis butterfly expert Art Shapiro once again won his own contest where he offers a pitcher of beer for the person who catches and hands over the first cabbage white butterfly of the year.

Shapiro has issued his challenge every year since 1972 as a way to spur his graduate students to bag the first cabbage white butterfly in Solano, Sacramento or Yolo County. He has won the challenge every year but three.

This year, Shapiro found that first butterfly of the year along railroad tracks in West Sacramento just a little past 1 p.m. on the same day that President Barack Obama was inaugurated.
