VALLEJO — The Vallejo Police Department announced, Thursday, that Highway 37, from Interstate 80 to Highway 29, has been officially renamed  the Vallejo Police Officer James Capoot Memorial Highway.

Capoot, a Vacaville resident and veteran police officer, was killed in the line of duty, pursuing a bank robbery suspect on the afternoon of Nov. 17, 2011.

At the request of the Vallejo Police Department, State Sen. Lois Wolk, D-Davis, introduced the bill to the State Senate, where it was approved.

Members of the Vallejo Police Department, Vallejo residents, Vallejo service organizations and businesses provided the funding for the signs, according to a news release.

The stretch of highway bearing Capoot’s name fronts the Country Club Crest neighborhood where he died.
