Retired Marine announces run for congressional seat
FAIRFIELD — A retired Marine lieutenant colonel officially announced his campaign for the newly drawn 3rd Congressional District.
Charlie Schaupp, who previously told the Daily Republic he was running, made the announcement Jan. 19. Schaupp, of Esparto, is part of a family that has farmed in the area dating back to the 1880s. As a Marine, Schaupp is a combat veteran of Operation Desert Storm in 1991 and the Battle of Fallujah in 2004.
“I am a Reagan Republican and believe in the principles of limited government and self-reliance that made our nation great,” Schaupp said in a statement. “I am pro-life, pro-Second Amendment and believe that local governments, not the huge fiscally irresponsible bureaucracies of the federal government, are best suited to solve our problems.”
There are seven candidates running in the June 5 election, which for the first time is an open primary. Incumbent John Garamendi is the sole Democrat. Other Republicans include airline pilot Rick Tubbs of Vacaville, pizza store assistant manager Tim Core of Yuba City, real estate agent and karate instructor Eugene Ray of Vacaville, prosecutor Tony Carlos of Yuba City and Colusa County Supervisor Kim Vann of Arbuckle.
The new 3rd Congressional District includes Fairfield, Suisun City, Vacaville, Dixon and Travis Air Force Base, extending north to include all or parts of the rural counties of Sutter, Glenn, Colusa, Lake and Yuba.
