Money flows into local state, national political campaigns

Election2012

FAIRFIELD — Campaign finance reports released Tuesday show who so far is leading in fundraising for state and national seats that include Solano County.

Oakley Councilman Jim Frazier has a huge financial lead in a five-way race for the newly drawn state Assembly District 11, incumbent John Garamendi is ahead in the 3rd Congressional District race and incumbent Lois Wolk leads in the state Senate District 3. The election is June 5.

“Our strong fundraising this last quarter is a reflection of the hard work we are doing to earn the honor of representing such wonderful communities, and the support we are receiving,” Garamendi said in a press release.

Garamendi, of Walnut Grove, is the sole Democrat in a race with six Republicans. The 3rd Congressional District includes Fairfield, Suisun City, Vacaville, Dixon and extends north to include all or parts of Sutter, Yuba, Glenn and Colusa counties.

Garamendi, from Oct. 1 to Dec. 31, raised $276,726 with $313,179 cash in hand. Donors to Garamendi include CEOs, attorneys, professors and actor Ed Begley Jr., who gave $250. Locally, he raised $1,750 from Vacaville store owner Satinder Paul Hayer and $300 from Fairfield attorney John Coyle.

Opponent Kim Vann, a Colusa County supervisor from Arbuckle, raised $95,032 with $190,648 cash in hand. Her campaign manager, Dan Sharp, noted that he saw few donors to Garamendi from within the congressional district. Vann’s list of donors, he said, is more representative of the district.

“I think it’s very telling,” Sharp said.

The remaining candidates in the race — pizza store assistant manager Tim Core of Yuba City, prosecutor Tony Carlos of Yuba City, airline pilot Rick Tubbs of Vacaville and retired Marine and farmer Charlie Schaupp of Esparto — have not done much fundraising.

Core and Carlos did not return calls for comment. Schaupp announced his campaign in January so he did not need to file a report. Tubbs said he has raised $5,000 and said this about fundraising: “Raising money does not equate to good governing.”

In the 11th Assembly District race, Frazier has raised $109,709. Political action committees for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 302 and the State Building and Construction Trades Council of California each gave $7,800, the largest of any donor. Several other unions or committees for unions each gave Frazier $3,900.

Patricia Hernandez, a union negotiator from Rio Vista, raised $38,050. Two organizations affiliated with the American Federation of Federal, State, County and Municipal Employees each gave $7,800 as did the Union of American Physicians and Dentists medical defense fund. Roger M.Y. Wu, a doctor for the city and county of San Francisco, donated $3,600.

Gene Gantt, a retired firefighter from Vacaville, has raised $29,503, primarily with support from local fire chiefs, firefighters and firefighter unions. Mike Hudson, vice mayor of Suisun City, raised $5,220, mostly in small donations of $100 to $250 from people in Vacaville, Folsom, Vallejo and Cupertino but primarily from Fairfield residents.

Former Vacaville mayor Len Augustine did not have to file a report because he recently announced his campaign.

Incumbent Wolk, who is running for state Senate District 3, raised $91,489 from July 1 to Dec. 31. Fairfield businessman Steven Kays, who recently announced his campaign, had no fundraising records on file with the California Secretary of State.
