The preserve on southern Mare Island along the Mare Island Strait and San Pablo Bay is open from 10 a.m. to sunset Fridays through Sundays. The San Francisco Osprey Days event features numerous car and walking tours led by field guides from the Napa-Solano Audubon Society and the Golden Gate Raptor Observatory.
In addition, U.S. Geological Survey wildlife biologists, Bay Osprey Project coordinator Tony Brake and fellow monitoring and reporting team member Harv Wilson, will have lunchtime “citizen science” gatherings each day at the preserve visitor center. The lunch presentations include digital slide shows featuring images by local photographers Eric Dugan, Bill George, Tim Buckley, Erik Halberstadt, Hank Miller, Wally NeVille and Karlyn Lewis.
In addition to the free events, Dolphin Charters will offer osprey nest viewing boat trips from 8:45 to 10:45 a.m. Saturday and 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday. The trips leave from the Vallejo Marina. For reservations, go to www.Dolphincharters.com or call 510-527-9622 or 800-472-9942.
The preserve parking, main trailhead and visitors center are located at the intersection of Railroad Avenue and 167 O’Hara Court on Mare Island. Go to www.mareislandpreserve.org for more information and a schedule of events.
